Space Tank:

A New Kind of Radio

Space Tank is a new kind of radio that allows users to listen to live music and connect them visually through a live video feed.

10 Step Design Process:

1. Problem Space

5. Journey Map

2. User Interviews

6. Design Studio

9. Prototyping

3. Affinity Map

7. MoSCow Method

10. Usability Testing

4. Formulate Persona

8. Feature Prioritization

Our Challenge

Users need to feel more connected to the community while participating in remote experiences to maintain a positive, productive headspace.

How might we provide a space that can discover new music, explore new places, and share her experience with friends within a community?

Research

Upon grouping similar data points we were able to clearly understand out research. Clear insights began to become readily apparent.

We created a persona through the research and findings from our user interviews. 80% of our interviewees are under the age of 45 and are all working professionals trying to balance work and a remote social life during the global pandemic.

Design Studio

We wanted to include our front end development team in the design. By individually sketching, pitching, critiquing and iterating we were able to visualize our ideas and refine our design.

MoSCoW

Using the MoSCow method we collaborated on the MUST have and SHOULD have features as opposed to the COULD and WON’T.

Feature Pri

We then went directly to create a Feature Prioritization Matrix where we determined the essential features and decided which would be the most cost effective.

Usability Testing

This task, though simple, will give us results that will lead to insights on how receptive our audience is to the playful microcopy of the homepage and how quickly the login function can be accomplished.

Favorite.

The results of this task will show us how easily users can navigate through the mobile website by utilising the side arrows. It also shows us if they can easily identify the ‘heart’ icon as an icon that would function as ‘favorite’.

Share.

The connections icon has been located to accommodate the volume slider. This move brings the two most important icons in close proximity (favorite and connection).

Testing Results:

We conducted two rounds of testing and upon the final usability test, the first and third task remained successful. We saw significant improvement in results on the second task showing that participants could more quickly understand the concept of the website.

Prototype

Mobile Design

We started to primarily design a mobile web design in which we conducted multiple usability tests.

Desktop Design

We integrated the same elements and features, taking into consideration the larger viewport.

A huge benefit of the desktop version of Space Tank is the larger area for the live video feed.

The Next Step:

We’re aiming to incorporate several other features after (or potentially before) launch - namely, we’d like to incorporate a casting feature so users can project Space Tank wherever they want to create an atmosphere.
